5. Conditions for transfer to a higher year of study
6. Units of study
1. Professional title and description of vocation
After completion of undergraduate study in civil engineering (nine semesters) the following professional title is acquired: Diploma Engineer in Civil Engineering.
With completion of this programme of study a graduate civil engineer acquires a general university education in civil engineering for:
- independent management of a building site, construction management and construction technology;
- design of necessary technical documents for construction and reconstruction of buildings and civil engineering works;
- design of structures, design of stability of structures;
- design of water supply, land reclamation, sewers and other hydraulic engineering structures;
- design for roads, railways, airports and other construction projects of transportation engineering systems;
- co-ordination of complex technical documentation for civil engineering projects, organisation and construction technology, and environmental protection;
- production and management of various geotechnical projects, including the planning and control of geotechnical investigation works;
- testing and control of the quality of civil engineering works and materials;
- preparation of feasibility studies for civil engineering projects;
- scientific-research work in civil engineering.
2. Duration and instructional form of courses
This full-time study lasts four and a half years, i.e. nine semesters. In one academic year teaching is organised in the winter and summer semesters. Within one semester teaching is provided for a period of 15 weeks. The number of teaching periods, including lectures and practice, amounts to about 27 a week.
Teaching is carried out during the I - VIII semesters in the form of lectures, practice and seminars. In the IX semester a graduation thesis is produced and defended.
The first three years (I - VI semesters) and partly the VII semester, consists of general study. In the fourth year students may elect one of the following six branches of study:
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Materials
- Hydraulic Engineering
- Structures
- Construction Management
- Transportation Engineering
The number of candidates for a particular branch of study is decided upon by the Faculty Council, while selection is carried out on the basis of success during the first three years of study.
3. Admission Policy and Entry Requirements
Study can be enrolled by a candidate who has completed at least 12 years of schooling. Selection of candidates is performed by means of a qualifying entrance examination.
The distribution of courses by semesters is shown in the following Table. The names of courses are provided with signs, number of unit values corresponding to the course and the number of weekly periods (lectures + practice). Courses are divided into common courses (Nos. 1-40) and courses of branch studies education (Nos. 41-114), while branch study courses are obligatory and optional.
Common courses ( symbol " Z" ) form the basic framework of the study (I-VI semester and partly in the VII semester). All courses require taking examinations (a total of 36 exams) except in the case of Introduction to Building and Physical Culture, while in Foreign Language and Computer Sciences courses assessment of knowledge is made through seminars and colloquia during the semester when teaching is held.
Every student is obliged to enrol all 40 common courses.

| Explanation
of symbols in signs: Z - Common Courses; O - Obligatory Courses for branch study; I - Optional Courses for branch study. Out of the four figures the first two denote the group to which a course belongs - see Item 6, while the last two figures denote the ordinal No. within the group. |
After entering branch study courses in his Index (course and grade book) the student is expected to fulfil all obligations regulated by the Programme of Study for these courses and to pass the examinations.
4.2.1. Obligatory Branch Study Courses
Each branch study has its own group of obligatory courses (symbol "O"). In the case of the branch study courses Geotechnical Engineering and Materials a part of their obligatory courses comprises (obligatory and optional) courses from other branch studies.
In the corresponding column of the Table each branch study course is marked (#) for courses which have to be enrolled by students when a particular branch study has been chosen.
4.2.2. Optional Courses in Branch Study
Each branch study offers its own optional courses (symbol "I"), except in the case of Materials.
In the corresponding column of the Table all optional courses (from own or other branch studies) are marked ( ) indicating that these courses can be chosen and entered by students. A student entering the branch study Materials chooses the marked courses exclusively within one of the three groups of (obligatory and optional) branch study courses of Geotechnical Engineering, Structures or Transportation Engineering.
All optional courses (symbol "I" and symbol ) are held during the VIII semester, which facilitates structuring of the timetable and organisation of teaching procedures.

| N.B.: By entering the cited number of periods in optional courses in the VIII semester (marked "min."), the average burdening on the student per semester for all branch study courses amounts to 27 hours a week. |
4.3. How optional courses are chosen
Apart from the listed restrictions in Item 4.2.2. students can choose optional courses according to their own interest. Teaching will be provided on condition that the course in question has been entered by at least 6 candidates.
The final list of optional courses to be held in a certain academic year is decided upon by the Faculty Council at the latest by 15th February in the current academic year, and taking into account students` interests, the lecturers commitments and the possibility of organising consistent instruction.
4.4. Vocational practical work and excursions
Practical work is obligatory for all students and is a integral part of the Programme of Study. Students are obliged to carry out vocational work practice on the building site for a period of uninterrupted 20 days, after the 3rd year of study.
An obligatory part of the education includes vocationally-instructive students excursions. The list of vocationally-instructive students excursions is decided upon by the Faculty Council for each academic year.
5. Conditions for transfer to a higher year of study
Basic conditions for transfer to a higher year of study are:
- all semesters from the previous year must be verified;
- exams passed from all courses which end in the winter semester of the previous year of study;
- a determined number of unit values obtained from exams which end in the summer semester of the previous year of study.
Additional requirements are regulated for admission to the IV year of study depending on the branch study which the student wishes to enter.
5.l. Conditions for transfer to the II year of study
- at least 10 value units on the basis of examinations passed in courses which end in the second semester.
5.2. Conditions for transfer to the III year of study
- at least 10 value units on the basis of examinations passed in courses which end in the fourth semester.
5.3. Conditions for transfer to the IV year of study
- at least 9 value units on the basis of examinations passed in courses which end in the sixth semester.
- in view of each branch study the following examinations have to be passed in courses which end in the sixth semester:
- for Geotechnical Engineering => Foundation Engineering I, Hydraulic Engineering Systems
- for Materials => depending on the choice of the GROUP of optional courses in the branch study of Geotechnical Engineering, Structures or Transportation Engineering, the condition is examinations passed in all subjects as for the above branch study courses
- for Hydraulic Engineering => Foundation Engineering I, Hydraulic Engineering Systems
- for Structures => Concrete Structures I, Masonry Structures
- for Construction Management => Concrete Structures I, Civil Engineering Machines
- for Transportation Engineering => Roads, Railways
- completed practical work.
5.4. Conditions for preparing and defending graduation thesis:
A student can be assigned a graduation thesis when he or she has passed all the relevant examinations according to the Programme of Study. Preparation of the graduation thesis may last from one and a half up to three months. After submitting their theses students may take the final examination.
Regulations on the preparation and defence of graduation theses are regulated by a specific decision, passed by the Faculty Council.
5.5. Assessment of knowledge
Assessment of knowledge is carried out in the semester, during the process of teaching, practical work, seminars and colloquia according to the teaching plan for each course. The final evaluation mark is determined during the examination. Examinations are held in three regular examination terms (winter, summer and autumn) when teaching is not taking place, and in extra examination terms during the semester, which are determined by the Faculty Council.
Courses are divided according to the content and purpose into the following groups:
| sign | ||||||||||
| 1. General Courses | 00 | |||||||||
| 2. Courses in Mathematics and Physics | 10 | |||||||||
| 3. Courses in Engineering Mechanics | 20 | |||||||||

| 7. Structures Courses | 24 | |||||||||
| 8. Construction Management Courses | 25 | |||||||||
| 9. Courses in Transportation Engineering | 26 | |||||||||
Lecturers and Senior Lecturers may only be in charge of the group of General Courses.
